Essay about The History and Future of Schizophrenia

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, schizophrenia is characterized by the development of two or more symptoms of the following symptoms in a one-month period. The symptoms most characteristic of schizophrenia are delusions, hallucinations, and/or disorganized speech. Schizophrenia has always been a disorder shrouded in mystery. There have been many hypotheses from varying perspectives proposing different sources of causation for schizophrenia. Some of these hypotheses have considerable amounts of research, while some lack support. To fully comprehend and appreciate the disorder, it is important to take into consideration its history. In this way, the full extent to which each branch of the disorder has developed can be†¦show more content†¦However, science’s reasoning for schizophrenia failed sometimes too. For instance, a hypothesis explaining the causation of schizophrenia was developed in the 1900s by Freud, he believed that schizophrenia evolved fr om conditions that are caused by a world that is exceedingly strident towards individuals either by parents that have been unnurturing to their children or if they have experienced a trauma (Insel, 2010). However, in 1948, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann expanded on Freud’s theory by stating that it was the mother’s fault for the development of a mental disorder. These women were called schizophrenogenic (schizophrenia-causing) mothers (Comer, 2013). It was the mother’s fault for the genetics the children could possibly develop or even for the way they treated their children. However, much research has gone into this idea only to eventually discover that there is more to the picture. The gene for schizophrenia has never been found even though countless research studies have been done to find it (Joseph, 2004). The genetics for schizophrenia has been studied through twin studies. These studies look at monozygotic (identical) twins and dizygotic (fraternal) twins. However , most of these studies fail to take into consideration the full environment of the twins (Joseph, 2004). By surveying four idiom dictionaries (CCDI, LDE1, LID, OD1), I collected a total of 91 expressions, selecting the units labelled as British or without any geographical label: 69 idioms, 5 binomials, 11 similes and 6 formulae, l or each unit, I provided usage labels, when found  in dictionaries (derogatory, euphemistic, humorous, colloquial/informal, formal, dated, old-fashioned, archaic, slang, literary). The manner of arrangement chosen to present the list of data is by- phraseological type and syntactic structure. Phraseology appeared in the domain of lexicology and is undergoing the process of segregating as a separate branch of linguistics. The reason is clear- lexicology deals with words and their meanings, whereas phraseology studies such collocations of words (phraseologisms, phraseological units, idioms), where the meaning of the whole collocation is different from the simple sum of literal meanings of the words, comprising a phraseological unit. F.e. Dutch auction is not an auction taking place in Netherlands. The meaning of this phraseological unit refers to any auction, where instead of rising, the prices fall (compare Dutch comfort, Dutch courage, Dutch treat' reflecting complicated historical factors). We will write a custom essay sample on Proverbs Language or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Phraseological units are (according to Prof. Kunin A.V.) stable word-groups with partially or fully transferred meanings (to kick the bucket, Greek gift, drink till alls blue, drunk as a fiddler (drunk as a lord, as a boiled owl), as mad as a hatter (as a march hare)). According to Rosemarie Glaser, a phraseological unit is a lexicalized, reproducible bilexemic or polylexemic word group in common use, which has relative syntactic and semantic stability, may be idiomatized, may cam connotations, and may have an emphatic or intensifying function in a text [Glaser 1998: 125]. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Phraseology has attracted rapidly increasing interest from a wide range of language related disciplines (see Cowie 1998 for a comprehensive survey), which has yet to coalesce into an agreed set of terms and frameworks. It will be treated here within the combination rather than the neo-Firthian co-occurrence tradition of lexicology. In other words, phraseological units are identified by means of their internal form and external function rather than being observed to emerge from texts via automated analysis of their frequency of occurrence (see Howarth 1996, 1998), This approach is regarded as necessary in studies focussing on stylistic features of phraseology, which inevitably require close analysis of the production of individual speakers and writers rather than the processing of large coiporaen masse. Phraseologists no longer have to defend themselves from accusations that they are wasting their time on trivial phenomena: phraseological units of all kinds permeate everyday language use throughout all linguistic registers: in everyday speech, journalism, academic prose, literature, political or diplomatic speech and writing etc. Phraseology plays important psychological and cultural roles in language processing and social cohesiveness. The use of phraseology can be seen to contribute to clarity of expression and ease of comprehension in formal registers, and ease of linguistic composition in spontaneous speech. The use of phraseology contributes to a socially convergent style of speech or writing. Free Essays on Transforming The Federal Role

Transforming the Federal Role in Education So That No Child is Left Behind Summary of President George Bushes Education Reform Policy â€Å"We have a genuine national crisis. More and more, we are divided into two nations. One that reads, and one that doesn't. One that dreams, and one that doesn'tâ€Å" (Presidents George W. Bush 2000). One of the most interesting, and controversial topics in the Bush Administration is America’s Education Reform. Unfortunately, with the 21st Centuries hope and promise comes a group of needy students who are unable to read at a basic level. Our high school seniors are behind students of other countries on international math tests and almost 1/3 of our college freshmen are finding it necessary to take remedial courses before they are able to begin regular college courses. There has been a concern for some time throughout America regarding the quality of public education. Students are graduating from high school without adequate knowledge of the three R's. Universities are recruiting a multitude of incompetent pseudo-scholars. Employers don't understand why the new generation of workers do not possess the basic skills to perform the job. It would appear that American students are not learning as much as their parents did. And yet, teachers are still teaching, taxes are still being paid, and more funds than ever are being appropriated for public education. What's going on in America's classrooms? With the poor state of our educational system, National Standards are in the spot light. Although education has typically been the primary responsibility of local or state governments, the Bush administration is now getting involved.
